Five Ways We Connect With Local Business.
You might remember Dudley College as where you trained for a trade, picked up a qualification, or set off into your career. But alongside all the teaching and learning, there’s another side to the College that often flies under the radar – the steady, behind-the-scenes work we do with businesses across the West Midlands and beyond.
Are you thinking about hiring? Struggling to fill a skills gap? Want to give the team you’ve already got a sharper edge? There’s a good chance the College can help – and probably in more ways than you realise. We work with hundreds of West Midlands employers, from small local businesses to major regional names, and around 12,000 students come through our doors each year. So, whether you’re running a business, building a team, or simply curious about what the College does now, here’s a practical look at five ways we connect with the world of work.
- Apprenticeships – A smarter route to new talent
Apprenticeships aren’t just for big companies or specific trades. The College offers apprenticeship programmes across a wide range of sectors – from construction and engineering to business, digital, healthcare and beyond. Apprentices typically work four days a week and study one day, gaining hands-on experience while building recognised qualifications. Our Employer Engagement team handles the paperwork, helps match you with the right candidate, and supports you all the way through. Learn more about hiring an apprentice.
- T Level Placements – try fresh talent without the commitment
T Levels are a newer qualification for 16–19 year olds, equivalent to three A Levels and built around a substantial industry placement. Students spend 80% of their time learning at the College and 20% – at least 45 days – working with you on real projects. You get extra capacity for the work itself, a chance to develop your team’s mentoring skills, and a proper look at emerging talent before making any permanent commitments. - Construction Technical Excellence College – A national specialist hub
Dudley College was recently named a National Construction Technical Excellence College – one of a small number of colleges nationally with that status. In practical terms, that means deeper expertise, expanded training, and short upskilling courses for people already working in the industry. If you’re in construction, building services, or any related sector, it’s worth knowing about.
- Workforce Training – and FREE upskilling courses
Not every business need is about new hires. Sometimes it’s about helping the people you’ve already got to build new skills. The College runs a range of training options that can address skills gaps or development needs in your existing team – and there’s a substantial catalogue of free training courses available for anyone aged 19 or over and living in the West Midlands Combined Authority area. Useful for upskilling current staff or supporting team members moving into different roles.
- Higher-Level and Professional Qualifications
For team members ready to step up, the College offers higher-level and professional qualifications across engineering, construction, automotive and digital/IT – including industry-recognised qualifications from the Chartered Management Institute (CMI), AAT, and City & Guilds. Most are flexible and part-time, designed to fit around the day job. A practical route to growing the talent you’ve already invested in.
